Hindi

Etymology

Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀙𑁄𑀝𑁆𑀝 (*choṭṭa).

Earlier lexicographers spuriously suggested Sanskrit क्षुद्रक (kṣudraka, small, insignificant) but from this one would expect > MIA *khuḍḍaga ~ *chuḍḍaga > NIA *khūḍā ~ *chūḍā, with Hindi generally preferring *kh-.
