Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘙𑘹𑘽𑘐𑘜 (ṭheṃgaṇa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀞𑁂𑀁𑀕 (*ṭheṃga). Compare Gujarati ઠીંગણું (ṭhī̃gṇũ), Hindustani ٹِھنگْنا / ठिंगना (ṭhiṅgnā), Punjabi ਠਿਗਣਾ (ṭhigṇā) / ٹھِگݨا (ṭhigṇā).
