From Proto-Indo-Aryan *trápatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *trápatay, from Proto-Indo-European *trép-e-tor, from *trep- (“to turn”). Cognate with Ancient Greek τρέπω (trépō), Latin turpis, Hittite [script needed] (te-ri-ip-zi /tereppzi/).
