Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘡𑘿𑘮𑘰𑘪𑘲 (nhāvī), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀡𑁆𑀳𑀸𑀯𑀺𑀅 (ṇhāvia), from Sanskrit नापित (nāpitá). Compare Gujarati નાવી (nāvī), Hindustani نَائی / नाई (nāī), Sindhi نائيِ / नाई, Punjabi ਨਾਈ (nāī) / نائی (nā'ī), Maithili नाउ (nāʉ) / 𑒢𑒰𑒅 (nāu).
