Inherited from Old Marathi पाखिरूं (pākhirūṃ), from Sanskrit पक्षिरूप (pakṣirūpa), from पक्षिन् (pakṣin, “bird”) + रूप (rūpa, “shape”). Compare Gujarati પંખેરું (paṅkherũ), Hindi पखेरू (pakherū).
