Inherited from Proto-Indo-European *(h₃)pews- (“to blow”). Cognate with Lithuanian pũsti (“to blow”), pūslė̃ (“blister, bladder”), Norwegian føysa (“to swell”), Proto-Slavic *puxàti (“to blow”) and Latin pustula (“bubble”).
