Inherited from Old Marathi 𑘢𑘹𑘚𑘰 (peḍā), from Maharastri Prakrit 𑀧𑁂𑀟 (peḍa), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀧𑁂𑀟 (*peḍa, “lump”). Cognate with Gujarati પેંડા (peṇḍā), Hindustani پیڑَا / पेड़ा (peṛā), Punjabi ਪੇੜਾ (peṛā) / پیڑا (peṛā), Oriya ପେଡା (peḍa), Bengali পেঁড়া (pẽṛa).
