From Proto-Indo-Iranian *magʰám, from Proto-Indo-European *megʰóm. Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬔𐬀 (maga), Old Persian 𐎶𐎦𐏁 (m-gu-š /maguš/), English may.
