From Proto-Indo-Iranian *máyHas (“pleasure, enjoyment”), from Proto-Indo-European *meyh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬨𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬀𐬵 (maiiah, “pleasure”), Proto-Slavic *mìlъ (“sweet”).
