Inherited from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀭𑀁𑀪 (*raṃbha) + Middle Indo-Aryan -𑀓- (-ka-) (compare Prakrit 𑀭𑀁𑀪𑀇 (raṃbhaï), 𑀭𑀁𑀨𑀇 (raṃphaï), 𑀭𑀁𑀧𑀇 (raṃpaï, “to scrape”)). Cognate with Gujarati રાંભો (rā̃bho), Marathi रंभा (rambhā).
