From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red). Cognate with Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬊𐬌𐬜𐬌𐬙𐬀 (raoiδita), English red. Doublet of रोहित (rohita). Also related to रुधिर (rudhira, red).
