From Proto-Indo-Aryan *wanáwti, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wanáwti, from either or both *wn̥h₁-néw-ti ~ *wn̥h₁-nw-énti (to love) or *wn̥-néw-ti ~ *wn̥-nw-énti (to overcome, win). Cognate with Old English winnan.
