From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hwā́ti, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wḗh₁ti. Cognate with Latin ventus (“wind”), Ancient Greek ἄημι (áēmi, “I blow”), Old Church Slavonic вѣтръ (větrŭ, “wind”), Latvian vētra (“storm”), Old English wind.
