Etymology
From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śánkatay, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćánkatay, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱenk- (“to waver, be in suspense”). Cognate with Latin cunctor (“to delay, stall, hold up”), Old English hangian (whence English hang).
