From Proto-Indo-Aryan *śrāwáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćrāwáyati, Proto-Indo-European *ḱlow-éye-ti, causative of *ḱlew- (to hear). Equivalent to श्रु (śru, to hear) + -अयति (-ayati, causative suffix).
