From Proto-Indo-Aryan *źʰwáyati, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ĵʰwáyati (“to call”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰwHé-ye-ti, from *ǵʰewH- (“to call”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬰𐬠𐬀𐬌𐬌𐬈𐬌𐬙𐬌 (zbaiieiti), Old Church Slavonic зъвати (zŭvati, “to call”). Compare हवते (havate).
