Inherited from Prakrit 𑀤𑀳𑀺 (dahi), from Sanskrit दधि (dadhi), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰé-dʰh₁-i (“curdled milk”), from *dʰeh₁(y)- (“to nurse, suckle”). Cognate with Assamese দৈ (doi), Hindi दही (dahī), Nepali दही (dahī), Punjabi ਦਹੀਂ (dahī̃), Gujarati દહીં (dahī̃), Sindhi ڏهي / ॾही (d̤ahī), Oriya ଦହି (dôhi) / ଦଇ (dôi). Doublet of দধি (dodhi), ধান (dhan), and ধেনু (dhenu).
