Inherited from Proto-Dravidian *mām-kāy; equivalent to മാവ് (māvŭ, “mango”) + കായ (kāya, “(unripe) fruit”). Cognates with Tamil மாங்காய் (māṅkāy), Telugu మామిడికాయ (māmiḍikāya).
