From Khmer កំហែង (kɑmhaeng), កម្ហែង (kɑmhaeng, “to intimidate; to threaten”); perhaps extended forms of កឹង (kəng, “hard, stiff; harsh, severe, strict; etc”), from which Thai แข็ง (kɛ̌ng) was derived.
