From Proto-Southwestern Tai *ɣɔːᴬ² (“neck”), from Proto-Tai *ɣoːᴬ (“neck”), from Middle Chinese 喉 (MC ɦəu, “larynx; throat”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨤᩬᩴ, Khün ᨤᩳ, Lao ຄໍ (khǭ), Tai Dam ꪁꪷ, Shan ၶေႃး (kháu), Tai Nüa ᥑᥨᥝᥰ (xöw), Phake ၵေႃ (khō), Ahom 𑜁𑜦𑜡 (khō) or 𑜁𑜞𑜦𑜡 (khrō), Zhuang hoz, Saek กฺ๊อ.
