From Angkorian Old Khmer cāy or Pre-Angkorian Old Khmer cāy (“to give out; to scatter; to disperse; to dispose of”); compare Modern Khmer ចាយ (caay). Cognate with Lao ຈ່າຍ (chāi). Related to จำหน่าย (jam-nàai).
