From Proto-Tai *C̥.dipᴰ (“raw; not ripe”). Cognate with Lao ດິບ (dip), Shan လိပ်း (líp), Zhuang ndip. Compare Proto-Austronesian *(ma-)qudip (“to live; to be alive”).
