Etymology 1
Uncertain. Believed to be (1) from สาม (sǎam, “three”) + หาว (hǎao, “breath”, air exhaled; instance of exhalation), literally "three breaths", referring to the breaths of Hanuman, a monkey in the epic Rammakian who breathes moons and stars; or (2) a corruption of the old form, สัมหาว, which is possibly from สัม (sǎm, “to have sex; to engage in a sexual activity”) + หาว (hǎao, “openly; in public”).[1]
