From Proto-Tai *ˀjɯǝkᴰ (“hungry”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᩀᩣ᩠ᨠ, Lao ຢາກ (yāk), Lü ᦊᦱᧅ (ẏaak), Shan ယၢၵ်ႇ (yàak).Compare Middle Chinese 欲 (MC jɨok̚, “to want”).
