A new term proposed in 1980's from ლაზი (lazi, Laz) + -ონა (-ona, -field).

Proper noun

ლაზონა (lazona) (Latin spelling Lazona)

  1. A historical and cultural region of the southwestern Caucasus and northeastern Anatolia along the Black Sea coastline, traditionally inhabited by the Laz people, also called Lazistan.
    Synonym: ლაზისთანი (lazistani)

Usage notes

  • The suffix -ონა (-ona) is added to inanimate nouns to form toponyms. This term is therefore not unquestionably adopted by a large number of Laz people.
