From Proto-Southwestern Tai *pliənᴮ² (to change), from Middle Chinese (MC pˠiᴇnH, “to change”). Cognate with Thai เปลี่ยน (bplìian), Lao ປ່ຽນ (pīan), ᦵᦔᧃᧈ (ṗen1), Tai Dam ꪜꪸ꪿ꪙ, Shan ပိၼ်ႇ (pìn), Zhuang bienq, Nong Zhuang byenq or benq.
