Etymology

From Middle Chinese 收集 (MC ɕɨu d͡ziɪp̚, “to collect, to gather”), from 收 (MC ɕɨu, “to receive, to collect”) + 集 (MC d͡ziɪp̚, “to gather”). First appears in roughly 760 CE with the spelling 聚集 in kanbun texts.[1]

The 収集 spelling appears to be more common in modern usage.
