From 筒 (つつ) (tsutsu, “tube, pipe”) + 持 (も)たせ (motase, noun form of 持 (も)たせる (motaseru), itself the causative form of 持 (も)つ (motsu), "to have").

The kanji are an example of jukujikun, from Chinese 美人局.
