From 옥 (玉, ok, “jade”) + 수수 (susu, “sorghum”). First attested in the Yeogeo yuhae (譯語類解 / 역어유해), 1690, as Middle Korean 옥슈슈 (woksyusyu)., from Chinese 玉蜀黍.
