From Maharastri Prakrit 𑀫𑁂𑀚𑁆𑀚 (mejja), from Sanskrit √मा (√mā, “to measure”), from Proto-Indo-European *meh₁-. Compare 𑘦𑘻𑘢𑘜𑘹 (mopaṇe), 𑘦𑘻𑘪𑘜𑘹 (movaṇe).
