Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *pedóm (“step; bottom, floor”), derived from *ped- (“to walk, to step”). See also Hittite 𒉺𒋫 (pa-ta, “foot”). Cognates include Ancient Greek πέδον (pédon, “floor, ground”), Sanskrit पद (padá, “step, footstep, footprint”),Old Norse fet (“step”), Old Armenian հետ (het, “footprint, track”).
