From Proto-Indo-European *h₂ow-, *h₂ew- (“to see, perceive”), with the regular loss of a laryngeal before *h₂. Cognates include Ancient Greek αἰσθάνομαι (aisthánomai, “to perceive”), Latin audiō (“I hear, listen”) and Sanskrit आविस् (āvís, “openly, manifestly, evidently”).
