Etymology

From Medieval Latin Baphometh, deriving from Occitan Bafometz. Clearly a corruption of Andalusian Arabic مَحُمَّدْ (“Maḥummad”), ultimately deriving from Arabic مُحَمَّد (muḥammad) (compare Old Catalan Mafumet and Old Galician-Portuguese Mafomat), although other sources have been suggested. Doublet of mammet and Muhammad.
