From Middle High German gehœre f, from Old High German *gihōra f (attested as acc. sg. kehorun); equivalent to ge- +‎ hören. Compare Dutch gehoor. An originally more common formation was Middle High German gehœrde f, n, from Old High German gihōrida f.
