A partial calque of Swedish Malmö (literally “Ore Hill”, from Middle Danish Malmhauge), analyzing -ö as ö (“island”, ey in Icelandic), although -ö here has a different etymology, being derived from Old Norse haugr (Icelandic haugur, Swedish hög), of earlier Proto-Germanic and ultimate Proto-Indo-European origin.
