First attested as opten berch in 1326. Derived from a compound of Middle Dutch neder (“lower”) and horst (“overgrown elevated place”) and the toponym Den Berg, derived from Middle Dutch berch (“hill, elevated place”). Den Berg was formerly an independent settlement.
