From Old Norse Róaldr, Old Norse Hróaldr, from earlier Hróðvaldr, from Proto-Germanic *Hrōþiwaldaz, *Hrōþawaldaz, from *hrōþiz (“praise, fame”) + *waldaz (“ruler, chieftain”). Cognate with Icelandic Hróaldur, Norwegian Roald, and Old High German Hrodowald.
