From Proto-Indo-European *pr̥h₃-wó-s (“first”), from *pró (“in front, before”). Compare Sanskrit पूर्व (pū́rva-, “former, front”), Old Church Slavonic прьвъ (prĭvŭ, “first”), Tocharian B parwe.
