Proto-Celtic

    Etymology

Probably of PIE origin, although no-one has agreed on a definite etymology. Two possibilities have been put forward:
- Descended from Proto-Indo-European *h₂enh₃-
- A deverbal noun from *amū (to wash) with the negative prefix *an- attached
