Proto-Finnic

    Etymology

Three etymologies have been proposed:
- Derivative from a Proto-Uralic root *ate + *-ja, compare eastern Khanty от (ot).
- Derivative from *asedak (“to live”) (suggesting instead *asja) and ultimately from Proto-Uralic *ëśe-.
- Borrowing from Proto-Germanic *(uz)andiją, for which there appears to be little evidence however; the proposed descendant Swedish ärende (“task, errand”) is from Proto-Germanic *airundiją.
Vershinin moreover compares the word with Erzya азкс (azks, “story”)[1] which is not compatible with any of these.
