Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Unknown. Possibly a derivative *soo- + *-ra from an otherwise unattested root, possibly loaned from Proto-Germanic *stā-, *stō- (“to stand”). In this case the earliest meaning would have been "free-standing, erect", as is suggested by the further derivative *sooro (“penis of domesticated animal”). The Germanic etymology is however rejected by LÄGLOS on semantic grounds.[1]
