Proto-Finnic
Etymology
Of disputed origin. Borrowed from another language, but which source is correct is not certain:
- Proto-Baltic *talˀa-; compare Old Prussian talas and the latter component of Lithuanian pãtalas.
- Proto-Germanic *stallaz; compare Old Norse stallr, English stall.
- Proto-Indo-Iranian *tálas; compare Sanskrit तल (tala).
In any of these three cases, the stem *tala(s) was then further derived with + *-oi.
