Etymology
From Proto-Finno-Permic *wanša. Cognate with Proto-Permic *wanša (whence Komi-Zyrian важ (važ) and Udmurt вуж (vuž)). In the past was also considered a possible borrowing from Proto-Germanic *wanhaz, *wanhą (“crooked, bent, bad”), but this is unlikely.
