Proto-Georgian-Zan

Alternative forms

  • *ʒu- (Fähnrich, 2007)

Etymology

This root refers only to female breast, while Proto-Kartvelian *mḳerd- is a general term, used both for male and female breast.

The irregular reflex of Laz could be explained either by the symbolic nature of the word or by the influence of Greek βυζί (vyzí) and Greek βυζάνω (vyzáno) or Adyghe быдзы (bəʒə) and Kabardian быдзы (bəʒə).

The root is reconstructable only to a Proto-Georgian-Zan level, in Svan the word Svan დუდუ̂ლ (dudûl, nipple) comes from Proto-Kartvelian *dud-.

Root

*ʒuʒu-

  1. breast (female)
