Etymology
From Proto-Indo-European *h₃émbʰō ~ *h₃m̥bʰnés (< *h₃énbʰ-on-), variant of *h₃nobʰ-, whence also *nabō (“nave”) and *nabalô ~ *nabulô (“navel”). Compare Latin umbō (“boss (of a shield)”) (< *h₃nbʰ-n-).
