From Proto-Indo-European *bʰrews- (“to swell”). Related to *brusts as well as to the verb *brustijaną (“to sprout”). Cognate with Proto-Slavic *brъstь (“bud”), possibly Albanian brushtull (“ivy”) (< Proto-Albanian *brustula).
