From Pre-Germanic *gʰlowmos, a mo-stem noun from Proto-Indo-European *gʰlew- (“to be merry”). Related to Ancient Greek χλεύη (khleúē, “joke, jest”), Old Armenian ձաղ (jał, “derision, mockery”).
