Probably from Proto-Indo-European *matn-, *mat- (“hoe, pickaxe”). Cognate with Latin mateola (“implement for digging in the soil”), Russian мотыга (motýga, “hoe, mattock”), Lithuanian matikkas (“mattock”), Sanskrit मत्य (matyà, “harrow, roller, club”).
