From *nutiz (“useful”), from *neutaną (“to enjoy, use, catch”), from Proto-Indo-European *newd- (“to acquire, make use of”). Cognate with Lithuanian nauda (“benefit, foredeal”), Russian нужда (nuždá, “need, request”).
