From Proto-Indo-European *sh₂wél(i)yos, substantivized attributive form of *sóh₂wl̥ (“sun”). Compare Sanskrit सूर्य (sū́rya), Hittite 𒀭𒌓𒇷𒄿𒀀 (DUTU-li-ya), Proto-Balto-Slavic *sáuˀlijāˀ.
